Life After Layoff
What goes through the mind after loosing a rewarding job?
At first there can be a period of numbness while the brain is trying to intellectually process the event. Next, the emotional system runs the gamit from greeving a loss to anger then self defeat. Often there is a high degree of stress from sudden change, lack of routine and feeling displaced. When cast into the discomfort of the unfamiliar, we may feel a loss of control. We talk to ourselves. Internal questions lead to frustration and negative self judgment.
"Oh @#$%&#! Why? How could I let this happen?" What do I do now? Resume, online employment sites, network, register for unemployment? Mortgage, car payments and other expenses are mounting. We may feel embarrassed, guilty and depressed. A continuous flood of emotion can diminish our ability to think clearly. When we feel defeated, it becomes a struggle to get moving ahead. There is a way to create a fulfilling life.
My Personal story:
I was employed in the marketing field for twelve years. In late 2000, I was laid off. The realization of losing a fantastic job was overwhelming. Worse yet was the idea that I may never find another working environment that provided the level of comfort to which I'd become accustomed. Insecurity, second guessing and fear of the future intruded into my thinking and limited the understanding of options.
I tried to start a new business while scrounging for consulting gigs and looking for a nine-to-five. I focused on multiple ways to go and in the end did not travel far from each starting point. Although great effort was exerted, the general lack of forward motion just magnified the insecurity.
Throughout this time, I acquired a library of books on self help, the psychology of winning, spirituality, success etc. Eventually the wisdom of these authors seeped into my consciousness Finally, I began to realized what needed to be done.
While I was concerned with what I had to do, I never thought about what I really wanted. There was no written structured plan to follow, no specific goals, no deadlines, no ways to measure success and no one to bounce ideas off. It became a frantic attempt to build a substantial structure without an architectural plan. It was hard to reach a destination that keeps changing.
Through the wisdom of writers like Earl Nightingale, Dennis Waitley, Wayne Dyer, Brian Tracy, Deepak Chopra, Anthony Robbins and others, I became aware of my purpose and passion. The creation of a plan for the next phase of life soon followed. Over the last eight years, I developed this program through research, graduate level training and experience as a therapist.
